LOS BLANCOS SECURE RECORD 15TH CHAMPIONS LEAGUE TITLE WITH 2-0 WIN OVER DORTMUND AT WEMBLEY

By Philiswa Nsibandze

Real Madrid have once again written their name into the history books, becoming UEFA Champions League winners for the 15th time after a composed 2-0 victory over Borussia Dortmund in the final at Wembley Stadium on Saturday, 1 June 2026.

Goals from Dani Carvajal and Vinicius Júnior in either half sealed the win for Carlo Ancelotti’s side, who continue to set the standard in European football and reinforce their status as the most successful club in the competition’s history.

EXPERIENCE THAT DELIVERS

From the first whistle, Madrid showed the control and maturity that has defined their European campaigns for more than a decade. Though Dortmund started brightly, Edin Terzić’s side struggled to break down a well-organised Madrid defence marshalled by Antonio Rüdiger.

The breakthrough came in the 74th minute. A fine combination between Federico Valverde and Vinicius Júnior down the right ended with a low cross that Dani Carvajal met perfectly, smashing the ball into the roof of the net.

Madrid doubled their lead in the 83rd minute. Jude Bellingham’s smart pass released Vinicius Júnior, who cut inside and finished calmly past Gregor Kobel to put the game beyond doubt.

ANCELOTTI MAKES HISTORY

The victory marks a remarkable milestone for Carlo Ancelotti, who becomes the first manager to win the Champions League five times (2003, 2007, 2014, 2022, 2024). The Italian now holds the record outright, extending his legacy as one of the greatest managers the game has ever seen.

“This club is special. Winning the Champions League never gets old,” said Ancelotti after the final. “We have quality, commitment and experience. That is the secret.”

A SEASON OF RESILIENCE

Madrid’s path to the title was anything but easy. They had to come through a group that included Napoli, Braga and Union Berlin, before navigating tough knockout ties against RB Leipzig, Manchester City and Bayern Munich.

In each round, they showed their trademark resilience. Late goals, come-from-behind wins and big performances in decisive moments became the story of their campaign.

KEY FIGURES IN THE RUN

  • Jude Bellingham: A sensational debut season. The Englishman scored 23 goals in all competitions and was influential throughout the Champions League, including key strikes in the knockout stages.
  • Vinicius Júnior: The Brazilian was electric in the final and finished the tournament with 7 goals and 6 assists.
  • Thibaut Courtois: Produced crucial saves when it mattered most, including a vital stop from Niclas Füllkrug in the first half.
  • Dani Carvajal: The veteran full-back capped a solid defensive campaign with the opening goal in the final.
