President Tufan Erhurman, in a written statement issued at the start of 2026 addressed recent developments surrounding the Cyprus issue, stressing that a sustainable solution can only be achieved through cooperation and inclusivity. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Referring to the New Year message of Greek Cypriot leader Nikos Christodoulides, Erhurman noted that while a settlement is repeatedly described as a priority, ongoing defence and energy cooperation between Cyprus, Greece and Israel risks deepening divisions by forming what he described as \u201canti Turkey axis.\u201d He mentioned that energy cooperation involving Cyprus, Turkey and Greece could serve as strong incentive for resolving the Cyprus problem, emphasizing that a solution is not reached by \u201ccreating or nurting antagonism that undermine it\u201d but by fostering cooperation. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Erhurman underlined that a \u201cclimate conducive to a settlement\u201d cannot be created by ignoring Turkish Cypriots, stating that progress is only possible through approaches that recognize Turkish Cypyriot as equal partners. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
He added that genuine commitment to a settlement must be measured not only by what is said at the negotiating table but also by \u201cwhat is done and not done outside,\u201d affirming that his side will continue to put forward proposals aimed at building conditions for a lasting solution.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
