Every semester, thousands of students pack their bags and travel to the quiet, green town of Lefke. At first glance, it might seem like a sleepy place. But step onto the campus of the European University of Lefke (EUL), and you’ll hear a mix of languages—Kazakh, English, Turkish, Arabic, French, and more. So, what is it that makes this university in Northern Cyprus the top choice for so many? The answer is a mix of quality, diversity, and smart financial planning.
Top Rankings and Recognitions
First, EUL is no longer a hidden secret. According to official results, EUL achieved a historic milestone, becoming the most preferred university in the TRNC for the first time in its 35-year history. Globally, the university entered the QS World University Rankings 2026 for the first time, placing in the 851-900 band. This international recognition gives students confidence that their degree is respected worldwide.
Affordability and Generous Scholarships
For many students, the biggest reason is financial. As a non-profit state university, EUL keeps its tuition competitive. But the real advantage lies in the scholarships. EUL offers merit-based scholarships from 50% to 100% for international students. Furthermore, recognizing the economic struggles some students face, the university has a special policy for those from low income backgrounds. Eligible students can receive financial support (a waiver from 75% to 100%) that can cover not just tuition, but also accommodation and basic living expenses. For many, this is the only way to afford a European degree.
True International Diversity
“The world is here,” is a common phrase on campus. Currently, EUL hosts over 10,000 students from more than 30 countries. The university was even ranked in the 551-700 band worldwide in the 2025 QS World University Rankings by Subject, proving its academic strength.
Studying here means you are constantly learning about different perspectives. “I have friends from Nigeria, Turkey, and Kyrgyzstan,” says Ilan Bagytzhan a second-year student. “We help each other with homework and cook our national dishes together.”
Support and Activities
Finally, the university works hard to make sure students don’t just study—they belong. The Student Dean’s Office (Öğrenci Dekanlığı) organizes seminars, sports activities, concerts, and festivals throughout the year. Events like the “Cyprus and International Culture Night” help freshmen socialize and recognize different cultures from day one.
With its first-place ranking in the country, top-notch scholarships, and a student body representing 30 nations, EUL is proving that quality education can be accessible. It is a place where you don’t need a million dollars to change your future.
